The 5 has about 75,000 miles so its about time to change the fluid. People claim that it is a lifetime fluid, but it’s simple to change and wear happens even in a sealed system. Plus upgrading it should make it smoother especially on cold mornings. (or I could drive more patiently, but whatever)

Does anyone else change transmission fluid? any brand you prefer? I had Redline in the Miata and it was good, so I went back to it this time.

I used Motul Gear 300 in my Solstice, and Redline 75W90 for the rear diff. Looking to do the BMW early next year, but BMW fluids are a bit finnicky. I know Redline recommends an ATF in the the manual for some reason.

Redline is good. My BMW has to be serviced by a shop (it requires a lift, which we have now), so I don’t know what they use.

Here at Volvo we never change the fluid (if it didn’t leak out or got contaminated) and have never had an issue with our transmissions due to fluid quality. On every BMW i’ve owned as well. My e34 went to 416K with the original transmission never having to service it. Dat ZF 4HP22.

Also, dat AISIN AW30/40 on Volvo 960/S90 (and Toyota Supra). We’ve had many a 300K+ cars come in the shop never having to do a trans fluid service.

Note, none of those cars state they are “life time” fluid. We just know from aftermarket shops and shops that “specialize” in our cars having issues because customers want their fluid changed despite our warnings

I always change my MT gearbox fluid, diff fluid too

MT — Royal Purple gives much smoother shifts than BMW’s official stuff imo/ime

Diff — BMW’s fluid or Castrol 75W140 Synthetic with friction modifier

Best wishes and keep us posted

Mini guys swear by the red line stuff. I can’t speak from experience as I do not know the specifics of what is in my transmission but on the forums people speak of smoother shifts and all together better feeling transmissions with the red line stuff. I agree with you that these new long or even non existent service intervals are a load of bull and a lot of the failures that occur with the Cooper’s midlands 5 speed are attributed to the “lifetime” fluid going bad. My Dad and I are both a little wary of the 15,000mi oil change intervals that both our cars have as well.
